Terry Eagleton (Lancaster): The Death of Criticism

Stadtbücherei Stuttgart, Konrad-Adenauer-Str. 2

Prof. Terry Eagleton is a British literary theorist and critic, regarded by some as Britain's most influential living literary critic. Since October 2008 he is holding a Chair in English Literature at the Department of English & Creative Writing at Lancaster University.

What is the function of criticism today, or is it now entirely bereft of purpose? What have been its major functions in the past – in the ancient world, for example, in the form of rhetoric – and can these be re-invented in the present? Whatever happened to close textual analysis, and what is the relation between the critic and the intellectual?

Vortrag in der Reihe "Kulturtheorien", veranstaltet vom IZKT in Kooperation mit der Breuninger Stiftung und der Stadtbücherei Stuttgart.
